Passthrough porn — also called AR porn, mixed reality (MR) porn, or spatial adult content — uses your VR headset's external cameras to show the real world around you, then overlays a virtual performer directly into your actual environment. Instead of being transported to a virtual room, the performer appears to be standing right there in your bedroom, living room, or wherever you happen to be.
It's the closest thing to a "hologram" experience available with current consumer technology.
The effect is genuinely different from standard VR porn. In traditional VR, the entire scene is virtual — you're placed in someone else's room, on a couch that isn't yours, with lighting you didn't set. With passthrough, your real environment becomes the scene. The performer is standing on your floor, next to your bed. That shift creates a fundamentally different sense of presence and intimacy that standard VR can't replicate.
What is Passthrough Porn?
Passthrough adult content didn't appear overnight. It followed a progression shaped by hardware maturity, production adaptation, and shifting audience behaviour.
A Brief History
Early ARKit/ARCore demos produced short looping 3D animations placed on surfaces. Tracking drifted, scale felt wrong, and holding a phone got uncomfortable fast. Most sessions lasted under a minute. Purely novelty.
VR enthusiasts on Reddit discovered that scenes with dark backgrounds could be crudely modified through headset settings to partially remove the background. SexLikeReal began experimenting with AI tools to remove backgrounds, though early attempts only worked reliably for about 60% of content.
SLR Originals produced the first purpose-built passthrough scenes against green screen. The Meta Quest 3 launched with full-colour passthrough cameras, making the format viable for a mass audience for the first time.
Studios began producing dedicated passthrough content regularly. DeoVR introduced AI Passthrough and Alpha Channel passthrough. The content library grew from a handful of experiments to hundreds of scenes.
Passthrough is no longer experimental. Studios design scenes specifically for mixed reality. AI background removal continues to improve. The audience is growing.
Not all passthrough content is created equal. There are three distinct methods, and understanding them matters because the quality difference is significant.
How the Technology Works
1. Chroma Key Passthrough
Green Screen · Most CommonThe scene is filmed against a solid-colour background (usually green). Your VR player removes that colour in real-time, replacing it with the live camera feed from your room. You get sliders for Hue, Saturation, Brightness, Colour Range, and Falloff to dial it in.
- Most widely available format
- Works with any passthrough-capable player
- Studios use existing green screen setups
- Quality depends on tweaking and source material
- Fine details (hair, jewellery) are hard to key cleanly
- Green fringing ("spill") around edges is common
2. Alpha Channel Passthrough
Pre-Keyed · Best QualityInstead of your headset doing background removal live, the creator does it in post-production using professional compositing tools, then embeds a transparency map (the "alpha channel") directly into the video file. The file contains two parts — the footage and a black-and-white mask telling the player which pixels should be transparent.
Hit the passthrough toggle and the background vanishes cleanly — no slider tweaking needed.
- Much cleaner edges — fine details like individual hairs preserved
- No green spill, no manual tweaking
- Creators can colour-correct without affecting the key
- Larger file sizes (alpha doubles the data)
- Only works with fisheye projection in DeoVR
- Less content available than chroma key
3. AI Passthrough
Automated · Expanding LibraryDeoVR and SLR have developed AI models that automatically remove backgrounds from VR scenes — even ones never shot with passthrough in mind. SLR built a custom in-house algorithm specifically trained for VR adult content, since off-the-shelf tools excluded adult material from their training data and only worked on about 60% of scenes.
You find a video tagged "Passthrough AI VR," hit the button, and the AI handles the rest.
- Works on content never designed for passthrough
- Massively expands the available library
- No settings to tweak — fully automatic
- Still in beta — quality varies by scene
- Processing time ≈ video length
- Edge artifacts more common than alpha channel
So Which Method Is Best?
For quality: Alpha channel > Chroma key (well-produced) > AI passthrough > Chroma key (poorly produced)
For convenience: AI passthrough > Alpha channel > Chroma key
For content selection: AI passthrough (works on almost anything) > Chroma key > Alpha channel
Which Headsets Support Passthrough?
● Recommended
| Headset | Passthrough | Verdict |
|---|---|---|
| Meta Quest 3 | Full-colour stereo | The gold standard. Best balance of price, quality, and app support. The v64 firmware update significantly improved resolution and colour accuracy. |
| Meta Quest 3S | Full-colour stereo | Solid budget option. Noticeably lower camera resolution than Q3, but works well. Worth it if price is a factor. |
● Usable But Compromised
| Headset | Passthrough | Verdict |
|---|---|---|
| Meta Quest Pro | Full-colour stereo | Decent if you own one. Quest 3 surpasses it. Not worth buying specifically for this. |
| Pico 4 | Colour mono | 2D passthrough rather than 3D — reduces the spatial effect. Performer won't feel as "present." |
| Apple Vision Pro | Full-colour stereo | Best cameras of any headset, but limited to browser playback. No dedicated apps. $3,499 USD. DeoVR says AVP support coming. |
● Not Recommended
| Headset | Why |
|---|---|
| Meta Quest 2 | Monoscopic black-and-white only. Grainy. Technically works but the experience is poor. |
| Valve Index / Vive Pro | Monoscopic B&W cameras. Works with DeoVR but not great. Brighter rooms help. |
| Most PCVR headsets | No passthrough cameras at all. Not compatible. |
Where to Find Passthrough Content
SexLikeReal (SLR)
The largest VR porn platform with 25,000+ videos. SLR Originals produces purpose-built passthrough scenes shot with green screen setups, and their custom AI can convert existing VR scenes into passthrough-ready versions. Accessed through the DeoVR app — visit sexlikereal.com inside DeoVR's browser. Filter by "Passthrough" or "MR" tags.
SLR also developed a "POV Mode" that lets you toggle individual performers on or off in multi-performer scenes.
DeoVR
Both a player app and content platform. Hosts its own passthrough library and serves as the player for SLR. Supports all three passthrough types. DeoVR remembers your settings per-video. Premium subscribers get streams up to 8K/120fps with the AV1 codec.
ARPornTube
A dedicated passthrough-specific discovery platform that's been tracking AR adult content since 2019. Aggregates trailers and previews from passthrough studios, making it easier to compare staging quality. Supports up to 8K preview playback.
Studio Passthrough Compatibility
Not every studio produces passthrough content the same way — and some don't support it at all. Knowing which method each studio uses saves you from staring at a green screen wondering what went wrong.
| Studio | PT Method | Setup | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| SLR Originals | All three | Via DeoVR — one-button for alpha/AI, manual for chroma key | Most dedicated passthrough content of any studio. Purpose-built green screen shoots + custom AI conversion. POV Mode lets you toggle individual performers. |
| Czech VR | Chroma key (green) | DeoVR — manual slider adjustment required | Has passthrough-tagged content but uses standard green screen. You need to open Player Settings → Passthrough → enable → tune the Hue/Saturation/Brightness/Falloff sliders to remove CzechVR's green. Downloading gives better results than streaming — compression makes the edges harder to key cleanly. |
| VR Bangers | AI passthrough (via SLR/DeoVR) | Via DeoVR or SLR — use AI Passthrough button where available | VRB doesn't produce dedicated passthrough content, but many scenes are available via DeoVR's AI Passthrough. Quality varies by scene — works best with clean, well-lit backgrounds. |
| BaDoinkVR | AI passthrough (via SLR/DeoVR) | Via DeoVR — AI Passthrough where tagged | No dedicated passthrough shoots. AI passthrough available on selected scenes via DeoVR/SLR. |
| WankzVR | Limited | Via DeoVR — check for Passthrough AI tag | No dedicated passthrough content. Some scenes may work with AI passthrough or the holographic Falloff trick. |
| VirtualTaboo | Limited | Via DeoVR — check for Passthrough AI tag | Same as WankzVR — no dedicated passthrough, but AI passthrough may be available on select scenes. |
⚠ Common gotcha: CzechVR passthrough shows green screen
If you enable passthrough on CzechVR content and just see a solid green background, that's actually correct — it means passthrough is working but the chroma key isn't tuned to remove CzechVR's specific shade of green.
In DeoVR: Player Settings → Passthrough section → adjust the Hue, Saturation, Brightness, Colour Range, and Falloff sliders until the green disappears and your room shows through. Start with the default green screen presets and tweak from there. Check the video description — some uploaders list recommended values.
Pro tip: CzechVR passthrough looks significantly better on downloaded files than streamed — the compression from streaming degrades the green screen edges, making it harder to get a clean key.
Don't see your studio listed? DeoVR's AI Passthrough is expanding constantly — their team is training models to convert more of their 45,000+ video library. Even if a studio doesn't produce dedicated passthrough content, check for the "Passthrough AI VR" tag on their scenes in DeoVR. You can also try the holographic Falloff trick on any scene: enable passthrough, then reduce the Falloff slider to create a semi-transparent blend of the video and your room.

Tips for the Best Experience
💡 Lighting
- Bright, even lighting is critical. Dark rooms = grainy camera feed.
- Avoid mixed warm/cool light sources.
- Close blinds on bright windows — direct sunlight causes overexposure.
- Meta recommends at least 50 lux (soft evening light).
🪑 Room Setup
- Clear a few feet of space where the performer will appear.
- Declutter the performer's "standing zone" — objects break the illusion.
- Simple backgrounds work best — clean wall, tidy room.
- Some users position near bed/couch for added realism.
🎯 Viewing Position
- Most content is designed for seated viewing.
- Stay relatively still — excessive head movement causes drift.
- Check scene descriptions for recommended position (seated/standing).
⚙️ Hardware
- Update to Quest firmware v64+ — major passthrough improvement.
- Enable Double Tap for Passthrough in Quest settings for quick toggle.
- Clean your cameras. Smudges directly degrade quality.
Neither is objectively better — they're genuinely different experiences. Most people keep both in rotation. Passthrough is worth trying on Quest 3, but standard VR remains the backbone of the format.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is passthrough better than regular VR porn?
Different, not better. The "performer in your room" effect is unique and convincing on good content, but your room's camera quality isn't as sharp as a rendered VR environment. Try both.
Do I need a special subscription?
No. Passthrough features are included with standard SLR/DeoVR access. DeoVR Premium gets you higher-quality streams which help.
Can I turn any VR scene into passthrough?
Sort of. AI Passthrough works on many scenes, and reducing Falloff creates a "holographic" blend on almost anything. Results vary by source material.
Does it work with interactive toys?
Yes. DeoVR and HereSphere both support toy sync independently of passthrough. Visual passthrough + haptic sync work together.
Can someone in the room see what I'm watching?
No — everything is inside the headset. But they can see you wearing a headset and reacting to whatever you're watching. Plan accordingly.
Gaussian splatting — A rendering technique that reconstructs scenes as dense 3D point clouds, creating volumetric depth with natural parallax. Projects like BraindanceVR are already demonstrating performers you can move around. Not mainstream yet, but represents the next major leap.
Better AI models — SLR's custom algorithm will keep improving. DeoVR is training models to convert more of their 45,000+ video library. The goal is automated, high-quality background removal for any VR scene.
Better headset cameras — Each generation narrows the gap between virtual performer quality and real room quality. The Quest 3's v64 update showed how much firmware alone can help.
Live AR compositing — Early experiments in AI-assisted real-time compositing for cam performances could bring passthrough to interactive live content, not just pre-recorded scenes.
