What is Passthrough Porn?
Passthrough porn (sometimes called AR porn or mixed reality porn) uses your headset's cameras to show the real world around you, then overlays a virtual performer into your actual environment. Instead of being transported to a virtual room, the performer appears to be standing in your real bedroom, living room, or wherever you are.
It's the closest thing to a "hologram" experience available with current technology.
Which Headsets Support It?
Not every headset has the camera quality needed for good passthrough:
- Meta Quest 3 — Best passthrough quality for the price. Full color, good resolution. This is the recommended headset for passthrough content.
- Meta Quest 3S — Similar passthrough support but lower camera quality than the Quest 3.
- Apple Vision Pro — Highest quality passthrough cameras, but limited adult content support (requires browser-based playback).
- Pico 4 — Has passthrough cameras but quality is lower than the Quest 3.
- PCVR headsets — Most don't have passthrough cameras. Not recommended for this content type.
Which Sites/Apps Have Passthrough Content?
Passthrough is still a newer format. The main sources:
- SexLikeReal (SLR) — The most passthrough content available. Their SLR app has dedicated passthrough mode.
- DeoVR — Supports passthrough overlay mode for compatible content.
- Some studio sites — A few studios are experimenting with passthrough shoots, but it's not widespread yet.
How to Set It Up
On Meta Quest 3 (Recommended)
- Enable passthrough in your Quest settings if not already on
- Install the SLR app (sideload required) or use DeoVR from the Quest Store
- Find passthrough content — filter by "passthrough" or "MR" (mixed reality) tag
- Position yourself — clear some space in your room. The performer will appear at a fixed position relative to you
- Start playback — the app will show your real room with the performer overlaid
Tips for Best Experience
- Lighting matters — well-lit rooms look better in passthrough. Dark rooms = grainy passthrough cameras
- Clear space — you'll want at least a few feet of open space in front of you
- Sit or stand — most passthrough content is designed for a seated position
- Close blinds — bright windows can cause overexposure in the passthrough feed
Is It Worth It?
Passthrough porn is impressive tech but still in its early stages. The experience is genuinely novel — seeing a performer in your own room creates a unique sense of presence that standard VR can't match. However, the content library is small compared to regular VR porn, and the passthrough camera quality on current headsets means the "real world" part of the image isn't as sharp as the virtual performer.
If you have a Quest 3 and want to try something new, it's worth experimenting with. But if you're choosing between this and a standard VR scene, the standard VR will have better visual quality and far more content to choose from.
